What is Comprehensive Insurance?
Trying to get car insurance can be confusing and overwhelming, here at Bill Nickels Insurance we are trying to make it as easy as possible! Today we are going to break down what Comprehensive Insurance means and do you need it!
Bill Nickels Insurance agents are currently only licensed in the state of Tennessee. This means we cannot sell insurance in another state and don't tend to stay up-to-date with other states insurance laws. By Tennessee state law you are not required to have comprehensive insurance; however, if you have a lienholder they may require you to obtain it (TN.gov).
A basic definition is: "Comprehensive insurance (also known as “other than collision” in some states) covers damage to your car caused by events that are out of your control. It covers things like theft, vandalism, glass and windshield damage, fire, accidents with animals, weather/acts of nature, etc. Comprehensive is an optional coverage." (Progressive)
If you obtained comprehensive car insurance then a thief broke out a window and stole your brand new laptop then you would be covered for the glass break and the laptop. Additionally if you had hail damage, you car was parked and a tree fell on it, or if there was a riot in your city and your vehicle was damaged: you would be covered!
So now that your car has been damaged by something other than being in a car wreck, what do you do? First you would call your insurance agent and file a claim. This process is pretty straight forward, but sometimes can take a few business days. Your insurance agent will take all the information needed then send it to an underwriter. From their the claims department will review your information and either approve or deny coverage. This is where it is wonderful to have an independent insurance agent like at Bill Nickels Insurance! An independent agent will be in your corner through the whole process making sure you get the coverage you are owed!
Once your claim is approved then your car will get repaired. Comprehensive does have a deductible (usually $500 or $1,000) and this is the amount you pay out of pocket. That means if the total repair is going to cost $4,000 and you have a deductible of $1,000 then you pay the deductible and your insurance will pay the remaining balance of $3,000.

The ultimate question now is: Do I need comprehensive car insurance? Statistics show that 79% of drivers do add comprehensive to their policy because it on average only cost $24 a month! It is also good to remember that if you lease or finance your car that your lender may require you to have it (Progressive). Insurance coverage past what is required of you is always a personal decision. It is your propagative to decide what you want covered and what you are willing to pay out of pocket.
